Internal control is a set of activities that are layered onto the normal operating procedures of an organization, with the intent of safeguarding assets, minimizing errors, and ensuring that operations are conducted in an approved manner. Another way of looking at internal control is that these activities are needed to mitigate the amount and types of risk to which a firm is subjected. Controls are also useful for consistently producing reliable financial statements.
Establishing and using the proper internal controls is vital for businesses of any size. Poor or excessive internal controls reduce productivity, increase the complexity of processing transactions, increase the time required to process transactions and add no value to the activities.
Designing and implementing a quality system of internal control can be challenging. Adapting to rapidly changing business models and emerging technologies require a sound system of internal control—and those who manage them—to be agile.
The CICE Certificate will develop your expertise in designing, implementing, evaluating and monitoring a system of internal control.
